Biography

Dr. Joseph M. Furner, Ph.D., is a Professor of Mathematics Education and Curriculum and Instruction in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, Florida. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Math Education from the State University of New York at Oneonta and his Masters and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and Mathematics Education from the University of Alabama.

Dr Furner joined Florida Atlantic University in 1996 as an Assistant Professor. In 2002, Dr. Furner was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor and, in 2013, to Professor. His scholarly research relates to math anxiety, the implementation of the national and state standards, English language issues as they relate to math instruction, the use of technology in mathematics instruction, math manipulatives, family math, and children’s literature in the teaching of mathematics. Dr. Furner is the Founding Editor of Mathitudes Online.

Dr. Furner is the author of more than 95+ peer-reviewed papers and has been cited 2350+ times on Google Scholar by his peers. He presents at conferences locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. He has worked as an educator in New York, Florida, Mexico, and Colombia. Dr. Furner has been the recipient of many teaching awards in his career such as the Exceptional Faculty Award for the MacArthur Jupiter Campus for the COE. He also received the Florida Association of Mathematics Teachers Educators (FAMTE) Mathematics Teacher Educator of the Year Award for the State of Florida. He was named Teacher of the Year by the College of Education in 2009. Dr. Furner has proven to be a true scholar and teacher. He is dedicated to the education of pre-service teachers, as well as the improvement of K-12 mathematics teacher education. Dr. Furner also serves and supports many master’s and doctoral students at the university.
